Fuel-retail networks rarely buy “automation” as one thing. They buy it in layers, usually from different vendors, over several years. Understanding the five layers makes it obvious what any vendor conversation is actually about — and which layer is missing.

The five layers

  2. 2Forecourt controller (FCC). The box that talks to every dispenser, tank gauge and price sign in real time — the wiring between hardware and everything above it.

  4. 4Cloud central management & fleet. Pricing and promotions pushed from head office to every station; commercial fleet cards and vehicle authorisation.
  5. 5Network intelligence. The layer that joins the first four into one live model — forecasting demand, reconciling wet-stock and margin, flagging anomalies.

Where the friction usually is

Layers one and two are typically installed once and kept for a decade or more — replacing dispensers or a forecourt controller network-wide is expensive and disruptive. But layers three through five are where most of the value now sits: central pricing, loyalty, fleet, and the reconciliation that proves any of it worked.

The friction is that many station-management systems bundle all five layers together, so adding central management or network intelligence means replacing hardware that still works fine.
